[ Ethylphenidate ]

Ethylphenidate (Eth-il-fen-i-date) also known as Ching or Mr White is one of the most commonly found substances in research chemical powders often sold as “legal highs”. It appeared on the legal high market in 2011 and is currently under a Temporary Class Drug Order making it illegal to sell or distribute.

If you are affected by these changes in the law you can contact CREW for further information, advice or support.

Ethylphenidate is a stimulant (upper) drug closely related to methylphenidate (commonly known as Ritalin). Effects include feeling energetic and increased heart rate as well as increased sociability and sex drive. People using it can experience a restlessness, panic attacks, insomnia, pain and nasal damage from snorting and an urge to re-dose.

It comes in a white crystalline powder which is usually snorted or swallowed in a cigarette paper (bombed). An average dose for snorting is 20-50mg. These doses should not be taken as recommendations.

Snorting often causes effects to come on quicker than swallowing and it can be a more intense experience although effects tend to last longer when the drug is swallowed.

What you need to know

If you choose to use ethylphenidate:

Try a test dose (a small dab with your pinky)
Wait two hours before re-dosing to ensure there are no bad effects
Control doses by measuring amounts. Use accurate scales, do not judge by eye!
Users report a strong urge to re-dose but negative effects tend to increase with higher dosages, so take care and go slow!
Snorting of this product can cause damage to the nasal passage due to its crystalline appearance – if you are determined to snort, make sure you grind the substance to a fine powder before use and alternate nostrils.
Avoid mixing with other drugs especially alcohol or other stimulants which could put more strain on your body
Injecting is the most risky way to use this substance and increases the risk of overdose as well as getting HIV or Hep C. If you choose to inject, use your own needles and do not share equipment.

Legal Information

As of 10 April 2015 ethylphenidate was placed under a Temporay Class Drug Order. New drugs that cause concern can now be subject to a Temporary Class Drug Order for a period of 12 months, before they are made illegal and classified under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Temporary Class Drug Orders focus on supply and anyone caught will be subject to penalties of up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine.
