[ MPA (Methiopropamine) ]

Methiopropamine (Meth-eye-o-prop-a-meen) also known as MPA or Blow and found in many branded "legal high" products, appeared on the legal high market and has grown in popularity since 2010. It is currently under a Temporary Class Drug Order.

Methiopropamine is a stimulant (upper) drug with similar effects to methamphetamine which can make you feel alert and more energetic. It also increases your heart rate and breathing. People using it can experience a mild high, sexual arousal and loss of appetite as well as difficulty urinating (peeing), chest pain, breathing problems and an urge to re-dose.

It comes in a fine white powder which is usually snorted or swallowed in a cigarette paper (bombed). An average dose for snorting will give around 50 lines from a gram and for swallowing around 25 bombs from a gram. These doses should not be taken as recommendations.

Snorting often causes effects to come on quicker than swallowing and it can be a more intense experience although effects tend to last longer when the drug is swallowed.

What you need to know

If you choose to use MPA:

Try a test dose (a small dab with your pinky)
Wait two hours before re-dosing to ensure there are no bad effects
Control doses by measuring amounts. Use accurate scales, do not judge by eye!
Users report a strong urge to re-dose but negative effects tend to increase with higher dosages, so take care and go slow!
Users report long after effects (nausea, dizziness, headache, lack of energy) of up to 18 hours. Think about what you may have to do in the period following use
Avoid mixing with other drugs especially alcohol or other stimulants which could put more strain on your body
Injecting is the most risky way to use this substance and increases the risk of overdose as well as getting HIV or Hep C. If you choose to inject, use your own needles and do not share equipment.

Legal Information

As of 27 November 2015 methiopropamine was placed under a Temporay Class Drug Order. New drugs that cause concern can now be subject to a Temporary Class Drug Order for a period of 12 months, before they are made illegal and classified under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Temporary Class Drug Orders focus on supply and anyone caught will be subject to penalties of up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine.

You can read more about Temporary Class Drug Orders here: http://http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/1027/contents/made

The TCDO on MPA has been extended but MPA is due to be put into the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 in 2017 as a Class B drug.
